A tuneful, heartwarming story, it is based on the real life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. An Austrian abbey becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children, and brings a new love of life and music into the home. The Sound of Music was directed by Maggie Scott Sheehan, with music direction by Cassandra Kerr and accompanied by a live orchestra under the direction of Michelle Willis.
The Sound of Music performed March 13-21, 2026.
Director’s Note:
“The Sound Of Music” was where my love of theatre was born. As a 5 year old, I stood on the stage in my Kindergarten class play and sang “My heart will be blessed with the sound of music” – and I haven’t stopped singing since. My heart, along with the hearts of countless people spanning generations and cultures and languages, has been blessed by this story of strength, of love, of bravery, and of faith. What an honor to bring it to life once again.
The true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers teaches us powerful morals and principles that hit closer to home with each passing day. In their story, we learn about the importance of family, the strength of love, and the peace found in faith. Most importantly, we learn about the power of standing up for what you know is right, even when you find that you stand alone.
As I’ve read the words of the real Maria Augusta Kutschera in her memoir, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”, one exchange stood out to me in particular. Maria writes that, when deciding whether to leave Austria or to stay, the Captain Von Trapp said to his children:
“Children, we have the choice now: do we want to keep the material goods we still have: this our home with the ancient furniture, our friends, and all the things we are fond of? Then we shall have to give up the spiritual goods: our faith and our honor. We can’t have both any more. We could all make a lot of money now, but I doubt very much whether it would make us happy. I’d rather see you poor but honest. If we choose this, then we have to leave. Do you agree?”
As one voice came the answer: “Yes, Father.”
He continued: “We have now the precious opportunity to find out for ourselves whether the words we have heard and read so often can be taken literally: ‘Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His justice; and all these things shall be added unto you.’”
As a woman of faith, and a believer in humanity, I encourage each of us to have the bravery and the confidence of these seven young children and their faithful parents. I echo the promises spoken by Captain Von Trapp in Maria’s memoir as well as those uttered by Mother Abbess in our Abbey tonight; as you stand strong for what is right, for what is true, and for what is most important, regardless of the consequences that may face you, “Ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace”.
My heart has truly been blessed by “The Sound of Music”. I hope yours will be, too.
