Synopsis:
Orphaned in India, 11-year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald and his disabled son Colin. The estate’s many wonders include a magic garden which beckons the children with haunting melodies and the “Dreamers,” spirits from Mary’s past who guide her through her new life, dramatizing The Secret Garden’s compelling tale of forgiveness and renewal. The Secret Garden performed March 8-18 and was directed by Maggie Scott and accompanied by a live orchestra under the direction of Michelle Willis.
Director’s Note:
“What a joy to return to The Secret Garden after all these years! This show has always been such a big part of my love for theatre, and it has been an honor to pass the story along with a new group of fantastic actors this spring.
The Secret Garden is the story of a broken family, full of struggling people. But the joy of the story is, as Dickon says, that sometimes things that look hopeless “are just biding their time”. Dickon doesn’t see a dead, broken garden, nor a sour, angry little girl. He sees “wick”. He sees the potential that this garden- and this little girl- can have, if someone is willing to put in a little work to get them growing again.
My hope with this show is that we can all learn to see people as wick – to see them for who they can be, rather than
who they feel they may be stuck as. I hope people will walk away from the theater tonight with a renewed dedication to looking for the good in the people around them, and a restored hope in the potential inside themselves. The Secret Garden is a musical of joy and wonder. Of change and love. Of forgiveness and hope. We hope you enjoy the show! Welcome to The Garden!~Maggie Scott”
